Inaugural North American Traveling Fellowship Award, University of Utah Health

A/Prof Sumit Raniga has been honoured as the inaugural recipient of the ASES (American Shoulder and

Elbow Surgeons) and SESA (Shoulder and Elbow Society of Australia) North American Traveling Fellowship Award 2024. This prestigious award allowed him to represent SESA at leading North American centres of excellence in shoulder and elbow surgery.

Part 7 – University of Utah Health

A/Prof Sumit Raniga spent time at the University of Utah’s renowned Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Program, led by surgeon-scientist Professor Robert Tashjian. The program is recognised for its excellence in clinical care, surgical innovation, and research, integrating advanced work in biomechanics, genetics, and surgical techniques.

Supported by major funding from institutions such as the NIH and the Department of Defense, the program advances research in biomechanics, bioengineering, and musculoskeletal biology, driving innovation to improve patient outcomes and healthcare value. The University of Utah also provides world-class training through its residency and fellowship programs, fostering technical and leadership skills through facilities like the Skills Knowledge Integration Laboratory and initiatives including the Peery Orthopaedic Innovation Center.

During the visit, A/Prof Raniga had the opportunity to learn from Professor Tashjian, Dr Peter Chalmers, and Dr Christopher Joyce, gaining valuable insights from their expertise and experience. He expressed gratitude for their generosity, mentorship, and the inspiring time spent with such high-calibre surgeon-scientists.
