Part 3 – Cleveland Clinic
A/Prof Sumit Raniga represented the Shoulder and Elbow Society of Australia (SESA) at the Cleveland Clinic, a world-renowned centre of excellence in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. Founded in 1921 by Drs. William Lower, Frank Bunts, George Crile Sr., and John Phillips, the Clinic was built on the principle of “To Act as A Unit,” emphasizing mutual dependency and a culture of collegiality—a differentiating feature that continues to define the institution today. The Clinic’s mission of superb clinical care, medical research, and education remains a benchmark in academic medicine, supported across its main campus in Cleveland, 14 affiliated hospitals, 20 family health centers in Northeast Ohio, 5 affiliated hospitals in Florida, and a cancer center in Nevada.
During the visit, A/Prof Raniga had the privilege of presenting Translational research to the entire Shoulder and Elbow faculty, including Professor Joseph Iannotti, a master of modern shoulder surgery. The experience provided unique opportunities to learn from Professor Iannotti and build friendships with an outstanding group of surgeons. He expressed gratitude to Dr Eric Ricchetti, Dr Jason Ho, Dr Vahid Entezari, and Dr Charlie Cogan for their generosity, guidance, and hospitality. The visit was a memorable experience at a prestigious institution, inspired by one of his professional heroes, Professor Iannotti.
